![]() As a convenient alternative to surgery, it is possible to use injections to reduce and relax frown lines, forehead lines and even laughter lines around the eyes. The benefits of these injections are visible within 7-10 days of the treatment and last for four to six months, giving the face a smoother, more rested appearance. After this period, the benefits of injections will still be visible as wrinkles, and lines will be diminished. If a more permanent look is required the furrows may be filled by means of dermal filler injections. Benefits of wrinkle treatment injections: The injections take around five minutes. The Doctor will ask you to frown hard; this is so that he/she can see the exact pattern of forehead and frown movements in the individual patient. The injections are slightly uncomfortable, but brief. Afterwards, you will have some tiny red marks for approximately one hour, where the needle was inserted. Naturally, as with any injections, there is a chance some bruising may occur. The injections gradually take effect over a week to ten days, when you may notice that it is becoming more difficult to frown. After two to three weeks the muscle will be completely “asleep”. It must be emphasised that the injections is intended to make it difficult to frown; we all frown subconsciously, this treatment prevents inadvertent frowning. Some the patients may indeed be able to use some of the frowning muscles a little if they force the muscles very hard. This does not, of course, mean that the injections have not worked. Precautions: Although injections to relax facial muscles have been used cosmetically since 1987 it is at present not licensed for cosmetic use in the UK, but is administered at the physician’s discretion. There is a very small risk of eyelid or eyebrow ptosis (drooping) following treatment. In the unlikely event that this occurs, it is always temporary, and may be treated with eye drops for a short time if troublesome. High doses and frequent top-ups can lead to developing resistance to the products (i.e. they no longer work effectively). In order to reduce this problem it is advisable to have the areas of the face that you want treated all done at the same session. 1. How do the injections work? Facial expressions result in wrinkling or furrowing especially on the forehead and around the eyes. Injections prevent you from making these expressions by temporarily "freezing" the muscles, so that the skin around the injection site stays smooth. 2. How was it discovered? These injections have been used successfully for a number of years to treat people with serious nervous tics and facial spasms. The smoothing effect of these injections was noticed around the injections sites and as a result, cosmetic surgeons perfected the treatment of lines around the forehead and eyes. 3. Which are the key areas of the face for effective treatment? The best results are achieved on vertical frown lines between the eyes, laughter lines and the horizontal lines on the forehead. 4. Are injections painful? The pain factor is minimal; you will feel a pinprick at the injections followed by a mild burning sensation that wears off in minutes. 5. Will there be a long term benefit to having injections? Yes, by preventing the muscles from moving for a period of time, your lines will diminish and will appear less marked. 6. What should I do after my the effect of my injection has worn off? A repeat treatment will maintain your smooth new look. 7. Is it safe? Yes, it has been used in conventional medicine for decades. 8. How long will the treatment take? Your clinic will advise you as to how many injections you will require and where they will be placed. Usually treatments take about 15 minutes to perform. 9. How will I look after my injections? You may notice a few tiny pink marks where the injections were made but these will disappear within two days. Most people are able to return immediately to a normal life after the treatment. 10. Can I have my injections done during my lunchtime? Yes. It is one of the new non-surgical procedures, which is quick and simple, and ideally suited to lunchtime treatments. You will certainly be able to return to work after lunch, looking quite rejunevated. 11. Are there any activities I should avoid after my treatment? Avoid lying down for a few hours and keep the head upright to keep the solution from travelling to other areas. Avoid activities such as shoe shopping and yoga for the next 48 hours. Heat treatments and massage to the area should be avoided for at least one week. ![]() To book an appointment, telephone on 020 8905 5509 or send us an email from our Contact page by clicking HERE.
